The One Thing You’re Probably Not Cleaning, But Should

cell phone

If you aren’t regularly cleaning your cell phone, now might be a good time to start.

Even if you’re a clean freak you may be overlooking the one thing you probably should be cleaning. You use it every day without a second thought, even though it could be harmful to your health. We are, of course, talking about your cell phone. Cell phones are loaded with bacteria, harboring up to 10 times more bacteria than your typical toilet seat. When was the last time you cleaned yours? Here are just a few reasons you may be overlooking the need to give your phone a good wipe.

Bathroom Breaks

A lot of people unwittingly take their cell phones to the bathroom. A study in London found that 1 in 6 cell phones tested positively for fecal matter, and as many as 16% of cell phones are contaminated with E. coli bacteria. Not grossed out enough yet?

Mealtime

For many people lunch time is social, and that included socializing on the phone. Touching your phone while you’re eating is not a great practice. Not only will you get grease and food particles all over your phone, but harmful germs can also transfer from your fingers to your food. And ingesting those particles could get you sick.

Work Outs

What do people do at the gym? They listen to music or are talking on their phone. Shared gym equipment can carry tons of germs, which means you’ll be swapping all those germs right back onto your phone. Most gyms carry hand sanitizer for a reason, so make sure you’re using to help reduce the risk of germ transfer.

Germs Everywhere

Germs love warm, wet environments. Your phone generates heat just like your body. Holding your phone up to your face will increase germ count, and bacteria can live up to a week on any surface, even your phone. Instead of being grossed out, take action. Alcohol or electronic specific wipes can help keep your devices clean. Avoid soap and household cleaners, as they can damage your product. Dry microfiber cloths are surprisingly effective, removing up to 99% of dirt and germs. Also, make sure you are regularly washing your hands in order to reduce the risk of transferring germs to and from your phone.
