The Ultimate Carpet Stain Removal Guide

stain removal

With the right know-how you can get rid of most carpet stains.

Do you have a stubborn carpet stain that just won’t come out? Whether it’s food stains, water marks, or a spill on the carpet, there’s something that can help. Here are a few stain removal tips and tricks to add to your cleaning toolbox.

All carpet stains should be treated on the same basic principles. First, blot the stain from the outside in. Next, rinse thoroughly with clean water, then blot again and repeat until your carpet is dry. Never scrub the carpet as you risk ruining the fibers or letting the spill soak through to the carpet pad. Even if your stain isn’t significant, it’s always a good idea to run rugs and carpets through a professional steam cleaning to remove any unseen allergens, dirt and mold.

Water Soluble Stains – Blot with a simple cleaning solution using ¼ cup teaspoon of non-bleach detergent or white vinegar mixed with 32 ounces water.

Special Water Soluble Stains – For things like blood, chocolate, coffee, mustard, tea, vomit and wine, try using 1 tablespoon of ammonia with 1 cup of water. Do not use this method on wool-blend carpets. Rather, use mild detergent and water.

Wax and Gum – Freeze the wax or gum with ice, then shatter it with a blunt object such as a spoon. Vacuum up the pieces and blot the carpet with a towel.

Cigarette Burns – Use the edge of a hard or flat surface, such as a dull knife, to gently rub the pile off.

Glue – Apply rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball or soft cloth and press it on the affected area. Hold it there until the glue residue is thoroughly moistened, then gently wipe it off and repeat until the carpet is completely clean.

Urine – Use a white towel to absorb as much as possible, then blot with a cool, damp cloth. Spray the area using a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Finally, mix 32 ounces water and 1/2 teaspoon of non-bleach detergent and apply to the area.
