How to Stop Mud from Tracking Inside

Stop mud from tracking inside with a designated mud room.

With Hurricane Hermine coming down the coast, you should probably expect a muddy aftermath. No one likes when mud and dirt track inside, so it’s a good idea to take extra precautions in order to ensure your space stays clean. Here are a few tips for how you can keep the dirt outside where it belongs.

Designate Entrances for Muddy Feet

Limiting the number of places where mud can track inside is the first towards keeping the wet weather out. It’s best to choose an entrance that is high traffic and doesn’t feature any carpet or furniture that could get wet and muddy. If no such entrance exists, rearrange furniture so that there is more space for getting dry when people come in from the storm.

Create a Mud Room

A mud room provides a space specifically for transition from the dirty outside world to your indoor spaces. This is one of the best solutions for stopping mud from tracking inside. Any place without a carpet will do fine. Place mats down or washable rugs at every entrance to your building so that people have an area to clean up and dry off. Section off an area for people to leave boots/shoes at the entrance, and leave towels for people to clean off with.

Install Gutters Near Doorways

Even light rain can cause runoff from the edge of a roof, forcing guests to walk through puddles and a muddy waterfall to reach your entrance. By installing gutters, you can divert the downpour to another area, that way you aren’t pooling dirty water around your entryways.

Plant Good Ground Covers

Mud that is tracked inside usually originates from bare patches of dirt in a natural grass lawn. If you limit these surfaces with plant ground covers you will also limit the amount of mud that can be brought inside. Ground cover plants are also a great investment in creating a more natural, inviting backdrop for your business.
