The waiting room is the first impression that patients get of a medical office, and it’s important to make a good one. Investing in professional cleaning is a great idea for your medical office, but there are also several steps you should take to keep your waiting room clean on a daily basis.
Prevent Bigger Problems
The best way to limit cross-contamination and patient illness is by paying attention to what types of objects you leave in your waiting room. If you see child patients, don’t keep around stuffed animals or hard-to-clean items. Instead, choose things that can be wiped down or thrown into a washing machine or dishwasher. If you see adult patients, rotate your magazine and newspaper selection regularly to prevent germy pages.
Cleaning Up Toys
Like we mentioned above, it’s a good idea to take time to clean the toys in your waiting room regularly. Fill a large bucket with a mild cleaning solution and let the toys soak for at least ten minutes. Stir the mixture every few minutes to make sure that the toys are making full contact with the cleaning substance. Once the toys are done soaking, drain and rinse them. Let the toys air dry (or towel them dry if you need them in a pinch). The morning after you clean the toys, you can refill the toy box with the newly-cleaned toys.
Wipe Down Waiting Room Furniture
The other step in your waiting room cleaning process should be wiping down the furniture and all hard surfaces with a heavy-duty cleaning solution. This step should be done at least once a day and performed with sterility in mind. Using buckets and rags to wipe down furniture can cause cross-contamination. Instead, you should use an eight-fold cloth system to avoid spreading germs from surface to surface. It’s better to use more towels than to spread illness to patients in your waiting room.
