Office Kitchen Cleaning Tips

office kitchen

The kitchen is one of the busiest places in the office. It’s important to keep it clean and germ free.

Last week we discussed some of the most overlooked areas of the office that need attention when it comes time to clean, and the microwave was a notable spot. If you’ve ever worked in an office environment, you’ve probably noticed that kitchen appliances tend to get used and abused even more than they do at home. Neglecting to clean these areas properly can make them a breeding ground for germs and food borne illnesses, which can be a huge problem for businesses. Here are some tips for keeping your office kitchen sparkling inside and out.

Cleaning the Microwave

Place equal parts vinegar and hot water into microwave safe bowl and heat for about 5-10 minutes or until boiling. Then let the boiling water sit for another minute or two. Remove the bowl and wipe the inside with a wet cloth or sponge. You can substitute vinegar with ¼ cup of lemon juice or freshly squeezed lemon. It’s also important to remember to clean the exterior just as much as it is to clean the interior. The majority of germs in an office environment spread from hand to hand, so it’s a good idea to wipe the exterior of your microwave with an alcohol wipe.

Cleaning the Fridge

Office refrigerators can be notoriously disgusting. Assigning someone to routinely clean the refrigerator will help make it less of a problem later down the road. Regardless, expired or soon-to-be expired foods should be disposed of regularly. Always check used-by dates, but if any food looks or smells funny, it’s probably time to throw it out. Office refrigerators should typically only be used for short-term use, such as today’s lunch. Leaving leftovers for extended periods of time will

Cleaning the Break Room

Cleaning up after yourself is just good office etiquette, but if you see a spill or crumbs left behind in the break room you should probably attend to it even if it isn’t yours. Don’t let the trash or dishwasher pile up either. Trash cans should be kept dry. Another useful tip is to leave baking soda in the microwave or refrigerator to absorb any unwanted odors.
